Whitstable is the perfect little trip to the seaside from London Victoria, particularly if you are not up for the crowds and chaos of Brighton. Whitstable is a little over an hour from Victoria Station; the seaside is roughly a 15 minute walk from the station. The walk itself is not particularly inspiring, but the once you get to the sea and past the port, the charm of Whitstable starts to win you over.
As you get past the port, there are loads of little shacks offering to shuck your oysters and selling fresh fish. If you keep walking, you come to loads of small sail boats and the pebble beach. Whitstable Bay is a wide, shallow bay making the waters a bit warmer and a bit friendlier for bathing. These shallow waters are perfect for growing the world-famous Whitstable oysters which you can buy from sea-side shacks.
The Forge is by far our favourite place to eat in Whitstable. They shuck oysters right in front of you, they sell fish and chips, good chicken and chips and sandwiches. The ice cream is really good along with the local IPA’s, a good French cider. It is the perfect place to sit in the sun and enjoy the Kent seaside.
Further on is the quaint fishing village with art galleries, good restaurants, pubs and more oysters. We stopped by The Neptune further down the beach, a Shepherd Neame pub made famous by the Peter O’Toole film Venus, is the perfect place to warm up after a bracing winter beach walk.
Whitstable is a charming little seaside town that is not overly crowded and filled with good food and drinks and so easy to get to from London.
